The Health Equation Pain Clinic in London and Marlborough, Wiltshire

At The Health Equation, we help patients find effective solutions for acute and chronic pain. The cornerstone of our approach is always a clear and thoughtful diagnosis.

Acute Pain

Acute pain can develop for many reasons, often following tissue injury, inflammation, or strain. In most cases, the biomedical model works well:

  • A detailed history and clinical examination identify the tissues causing symptoms.

  • Imaging and laboratory tests may confirm pathology and guide medical intervention.

  • When appropriate, Osteopathic Manual Technique (OMT) provides gentle, effective support.

Most acute pain is self-limiting, but with accurate diagnosis, treatment, and sometimes short-term medication, recovery can often be faster and smoother.

Chronic Pain

Chronic pain is far more complex. It is not just a medical issue—it is a global health crisis.

  • In the US, adults living with chronic pain rose from 20% in 2020 to 25% in 2023.

  • Severe pain limiting daily life increased from 6.9% to 8.5% in the same period.

  • Across Europe, chronic pain costs an estimated €12 billion annually in healthcare, lost work, and reduced productivity.

But beyond the numbers lies the human cost: persistent discomfort, fatigue, emotional strain, and loss of quality of life.

Research highlights that stress, anxiety, and depression both worsen chronic pain and act as maintaining factors. Indeed, nearly 40% of people with chronic pain also experience depression or anxiety.

This is why modern clinical guidelines now recommend non-drug, holistic approaches as first-line treatments, including:

  • Physical therapy & exercise

  • Mindfulness-based strategies

  • Cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT)

  • Lifestyle and mind-body interventions

Understanding Pain Types

There are three main categories of pain:

  • Nociceptive pain – from tissue damage (e.g. sprains, burns, inflammation)

  • Neuropathic pain – from nerve damage (e.g. diabetic neuropathy, trigeminal neuralgia)

  • Nociplastic/neuroplastic pain – from altered pain processing in the brain (e.g. fibromyalgia, migraine, phantom limb pain)

We now understand that pain is not purely sensory—it also has cognitive and emotional dimensions.

Our Approach at The Health Equation

With over 38 years in practice, Mr. Gerry Gajadharsingh DO has seen how chronic pain often arises from multiple interacting factors—physical, biochemical, emotional, and behavioural.

Our pathway includes:

  1. A Diagnostic Consultation with a full case history, chronology of symptoms, lifestyle review, and clinical examination.

  2. Additional laboratory testing or imaging where appropriate.

  3. A comprehensive written report (often 10+ pages), explaining the likely mechanisms driving pain, tailored to each patient.

Patients often feel relieved and empowered after this process—sometimes even experiencing symptom improvement simply from understanding their condition more clearly.

We then design a management and treatment plan, which may include:

  • Osteopathic Manual Technique (OMT)

  • Breathing re-education & stress management

  • Nutritional guidance

  • Lifestyle modification

  • Referral to other specialists if needed
