During a Diagnostic Consultation, Gerry may identify findings that require further medical investigation, specialist opinion or treatment beyond the scope of The Health Equation.

Medical pathology and functional dysregulation are not mutually exclusive. A patient may have an established medical condition alongside physiological, musculoskeletal or lifestyle factors that also influence their symptoms. The purpose of referral is to ensure that each aspect of the presentation is assessed and managed by the most appropriate clinician.

Having worked within London’s medical district for almost 40 years, Gerry has developed an excellent professional referral network across a wide range of medical and surgical specialties. This enables him to direct patients towards an appropriately experienced private consultant when further specialist assessment is required.

When May Specialist Referral Be Recommended?

Specialist referral may be appropriate when:

• The history or clinical examination suggests a condition requiring medical or surgical assessment
• Blood tests or diagnostic imaging identify a significant abnormality
• Symptoms are persistent, progressive or remain unexplained
• A diagnosis requires confirmation through specialist investigation
• The patient’s existing treatment or medication requires consultant review
• A procedure, injection or surgical opinion may be appropriate
• Several medical specialties are involved and the next step needs clarification

Where possible, Gerry explains why referral is being recommended, what clinical question needs to be answered and which type of specialist is most appropriate. The decision is made collaboratively with the patient as part of the shared decision-making process.

How the Referral Process Works

With the patient’s consent, Gerry may:

• Write directly to an appropriate private medical consultant
• Liaise with the patient’s NHS or private GP
• Share relevant clinical findings, blood-test results or diagnostic imaging
• Recommend the type of specialist opinion required
• Help the patient understand the consultant’s subsequent findings and recommendations

The referral letter provides a concise clinical summary, relevant examination findings, investigation results and the specific questions the specialist is being asked to consider.

Where a patient intends to use private medical insurance, they should confirm the insurer’s requirements before arranging the appointment. Some policies require GP authorisation or a specific referral pathway before specialist fees will be reimbursed. Self-funding patients can often be referred directly, depending upon the consultant and provider.

Working Alongside the Patient’s GP

The Health Equation does not replace the role of the patient’s GP or medical specialist. Where appropriate, Gerry works collaboratively with NHS and private clinicians to support continuity of care.

With the patient’s permission, relevant reports and investigation results can be shared with their GP. This is particularly important when:

• Further NHS investigation or treatment may be required
• Medication needs to be prescribed or reviewed
• Findings may affect the patient’s wider medical management
• Several clinicians are involved in the patient’s care
• Ongoing monitoring is required

Following specialist assessment, Gerry can help the patient understand how the consultant’s conclusions relate to the wider clinical picture and how any recommended treatment may be integrated with their continuing care at The Health Equation.

Urgent and Emergency Findings

Occasionally, a consultation or investigation may identify findings that require urgent medical attention.

Depending upon the circumstances, Gerry may advise the patient to:

• Contact their GP urgently
• Attend an urgent treatment centre or emergency department
• Contact NHS 111
• Call 999 where symptoms may represent an immediate medical emergency
• Seek expedited review by an appropriate medical specialist

The private referral network is not a substitute for emergency care. Where symptoms or findings indicate a potentially serious or time-sensitive condition, the safest and most appropriate clinical pathway will take priority. With the patient’s consent, relevant information can be communicated directly to the receiving clinician or service.

Referral is based upon the patient’s particular clinical needs, the specialist’s area of expertise, location, availability and—where relevant—the requirements of their private medical insurer. No single consultant or provider is appropriate for every patient.
