Nutritional Supplements
Personalised, Purposeful and Clinically Informed
A balanced and varied diet, regular movement, restorative sleep and appropriate management of stress remain the foundations of good health. Nutritional supplements should support these foundations—not attempt to replace them.
At The Health Equation, supplements are recommended selectively and only where there is a clear clinical rationale. This may be informed by your symptoms, medical history, current medication, dietary intake, examination findings and, where appropriate, diagnostic testing.
The aim is not to encourage unnecessary or lifelong supplementation, but to use specific nutrients purposefully and review their continued need over time.
When Might Nutritional Supplements Be Helpful?
Even with a generally healthy diet, supplementation may sometimes be appropriate. This can include situations involving:
- A clinically identified nutritional deficiency
- Increased physiological requirements
- Restricted dietary intake or food exclusions
- Reduced absorption or gastrointestinal dysfunction
- Particular stages of life, including pregnancy, menopause and older age
- Recovery from illness, surgery or prolonged physiological stress
- Medication-associated nutrient depletion
- Support for a specific clinical or metabolic objective
The presence of symptoms alone does not necessarily indicate a deficiency. Where appropriate, clinical assessment and targeted testing can help determine whether supplementation is justified.
Physiology Before Supplementation
A supplement cannot compensate fully for disrupted physiology or an unsuitable lifestyle. Before recommending additional nutrients, it is important to consider the wider factors influencing health, including:
- Dietary quality and regularity
- Digestion and absorption
- Breathing pattern and respiratory physiology
- Sleep and recovery
- Physical activity
- Psychological and physiological stress
- Hormonal, immune and metabolic function
- Current medication and existing medical conditions
Through the Integrated Regulatory Systems Framework, these factors can be considered together rather than treating an individual nutrient result in isolation. This helps ensure that supplementation forms part of a coherent clinical strategy.
Personalised Supplement Recommendations
There is no universal supplement programme that is appropriate for everyone. Recommendations should reflect the individual—not simply a diagnosis, symptom or fashionable health claim.
Where supplements are considered appropriate, Gerry may provide a personalised written recommendation by email. This will usually identify:
- The specific supplement and suggested dose
- The clinical reason for its use
- How and when it should be taken
- Any relevant precautions
- Its relationship to other supplements or medication
- When its continued use should be reviewed
Recommendations may change as symptoms, test results, medication or wider health circumstances evolve. Patients should therefore keep the practice informed of any significant changes.

Reviewing Your Supplement Programme
Supplementation should not necessarily continue indefinitely. Its purpose and ongoing value should be reviewed as your health changes.
A review may consider:
- Whether the original clinical objective has been achieved
- Any change in symptoms or function
- Tolerance and possible side effects
- Changes to medication or medical diagnoses
- Whether repeat blood testing is appropriate
- Whether the dose can be reduced or the supplement discontinued
- Whether dietary and lifestyle measures can now provide sufficient support
The longer-term aim is to promote physiological resilience and independence—not unnecessary reliance upon an expanding list of supplements.
Important Clinical Information
The information on this page is provided for general educational purposes and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent disease.
Nutritional supplements should be considered in the context of your medical history, current medication, dietary intake, clinical assessment and, where appropriate, laboratory findings.
Do not begin a new supplement programme solely on the basis of information presented on this website. Please consult an appropriately qualified healthcare professional, particularly if you have an existing medical condition, take prescribed medication, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or are preparing for surgery.
Any new or worsening symptoms should receive appropriate clinical assessment and should not be attributed automatically to a nutritional deficiency.
Would You Like Personalised Supplement Advice?
Nutritional supplementation is most useful when it forms part of a properly considered clinical strategy rather than being selected through guesswork.
A Diagnostic Consultation can explore your symptoms, medical history, medication, diet, lifestyle and wider physiological function. Where appropriate, targeted blood testing may help identify deficiencies, imbalances or areas requiring further investigation.
If supplements are recommended, you will receive a personalised supplement list explaining the products Gerry has selected for you.
For existing patients with a question about their current supplement programme, please email info@thehealthequation.co.uk.
